Rogue/Thief/Assassin - Vax'ildan is a rogue/thief/assassin class. This gives him a high level of dexterity. For instance, he's been seen making a dash at a very fast pace to get through a closing door before the rest of his team had time to think about it. He's also good at picking locks and sneaking about undetected, like when he broke into an enemy's room during a banquet. This class also means he has a high level of perception. Compared to the rest of his team, Vax is very good at spotting traps. All of these skills mean he's usually the first person sent in when the team needs a new place scoped out. He can go in and out silently and ensure no one is walking into any danger.

Daggers - As a rogue, Vax's weapon of choice is naturally, the dagger. He has a pair of daggers he can throw, which have been enchanted to return to his hand and multiply. This means he can inevitably throw daggers until the sun sets if he wants to. His aim is incredibly good, as he can hit a small target at a distance with ease.

Deathwalker's Ward - After giving himself to the Matron of Raven's (the goddess of Death) in exchange for his sister's life, Vax was bestowed her magic armor. This armor enhances his natural rogue abilities. When wearing it, he can move from one spot to another faster than the human eye can track, so it almost looks as though he's teleporting. The armor provides him with some degree of protection against physical and magic attacks. In addition, the cape transforms into a large pair of raven wings that grant Vax the ability to fly.

Visions - Since becoming the Champion of Ravens, Vax has received visions of the future. These have always come in the form of warnings and nightmares. For instance, he had a dream that showed the attack of a group of dragons that would decimate a city. This vision came true when the group discovered that the dragon hatchlings were attacking the city of Whitestone.

The Dead - As a servant of the goddess of Death, Vax can see the souls of the dead. After the battle in Westruun with Grog's clan, Vax saw the corpses of the dead surround him. He has also seen his Matron shepherd a soul to the afterlife after being killed in battle.

Minor Magic - Vax can cast some minor magic spells, mostly for use in his work. While walking through the De Rolo tombs, he turned his dagger blade into a flame to examine a statue. He has also changed his belt into a snake to serve as a distraction. His ability to retrieve his daggers is also part of this ability.

Alertness and Senses - In other words, ever since becoming the Champion of Ravens, Vax doesn't appear to sleep as much as a normal person would. There are multiple instances where he's shown to be up at all hours, and he's usually the person who's on watch during the night when the rest of the party is asleep. He’s also highly sensitive to sounds, like when he was able to detect when Keyleth was following him. Additionally, elves have naturally heightened hearing and sight, able to see somewhat even if it’s pitch black.

As a half-elf born to a human woman and an elven leader, Vax's personality was impacted by how his father treated him and his sister. His father shunned his children, often critical of their tainted blood and lack of knowledge of Elven culture, since they spent their early years being raised by their mother. While the harsh treatment of their father made his sister Vex'halia yearn for their father's approval, Vax'ildan grew defiant. When he was only ten years old, he took his sister and fled, demonstrating his strength and overwhelming desire to protect her.

Things did not go quite as planned, however. It became evident to Vax that he was not as strong as his sister. Once out from under the eyes of their father, she showed she could survive, but Vax crumbled. He needed Vex'ahlia, and in turn, he needs others, too. Vox Machina is a family to him. Just like he protected his sister, he would protect any of his friends with his life.

This protective behavior is common for Vax. Early on, when the party faced a dragon foe for the first time, Vax was the first to feel an obligation to help the helpless. When innocents died because of the dragon attack, Vax was deeply impacted because he didn't stop it from happening when so many were counting on them. This shows that Vax can't turn his back on the defenseless.

All the self-doubt Vax suffered as a result of his upbringing filled him with a strong desire to find a purpose in life. For a time, he considered devoting himself to a temple, but the call of adventure and a desire to never leave his sister turned Vax toward a life of crime and mercenary work. Still, he longed for something bigger than himself. When he sacrificed himself, pledging himself to the Matron of Ravens (the goddess of Death) to save his sister's life, Vax found his purpose, but it wasn't accepted easily.

Like in his youth, Vax often tended to run away. He ran from his father. He tried to run from death, and he ran from love because he was afraid of hurting Keyleth. As he grew to accept his fate as Champion, Vax became surer of himself and bolder. However, being plagued with visions of the future impacted Vax and his decisions. Having developed a belief in fate, thanks to the revelations bestowed upon him by his Matron, Vax sometimes finds it hard to act. When it seemed as though he would accept love, he pushed Keyleth away because of a devastating vision of her future. Again, he acted to protect, but in doing so, forgot that fate isn’t set in stone. There are still some lessons he’s striving to learn.

When all those feelings beneath the surface aren't stirring about and turning Vax’ildan into a contemplative, moody raven-boy, Vax is a charming guy. He's handsome and uses that and flirtation to get the upper hand, when needed. For instance, he has no problem flirting with his old flame Gilmore to get a discount at Gilmore’s shop. Vax is funny, if a little crass, thanks to spending his time with rogues who travel the roads. He's also quite sweet, especially with children.

These days, Vax feels a heavy burden due to his commitment to the Matron. Even if he's run away so many times before, he's loyal. He will fulfill his role as Death's Champion. But in the meantime, Vax seeks to use what power he has to protect others.
